Why Game Changers Need Other Game Changers If They Want To Make Big Things Happen Online

Who we surround ourselves with can really shape and define our journey as creative entrepreneurs.

Doing this alone is not an option if we want to really do brave and bold things along the way. Having other dreamers and big thinkers by our side to cheer us on and inspire us as they lead the way too is a huge game changer when we’re working crazy hard to build a business and a life that makes us excited to get out of bed every morning. Ever heard the phrase - “you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”? It couldn’t ring more true when it comes to being a freelancer, blogger, and creative entrepreneur.

You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with

Whether you call it a tribe, a community, or a creative pack, the most important thing is that you have people around you who keep you moving forward. They need to see the world as big as you do, be as excited as you are about taking brave and bold steps forward, and inspire you to be fearless with everything that you do. But I know this is easier said than done when you’re sat behind a computer screen, working hard to make big and beautiful things happen but struggling to find your creative pack along the way. But once you find them and really invest your time and energy into building those authentic relationships, this journey is way more fulfilling along the way.

On Tuesday I hit send on an email I was super scared about - it was the pre-curser to a launch I have coming next week for my biggest and boldest offering yet. So when a message arrived from one of my best internet-turned-real-life friends cheering me on with words of encouragement, my anxieties and fears started to fade away. And then my inbox started to fill up with my creative friends, sharing their excitement for me and wishing me the best with my upcoming launch, and although I was a ball of nerves after taking that initial first step into launching my new offering to the world, my creative pack and network reminded me that I can do this and that I have awesome people cheering me on from the sidelines, which is seriously powerful stuff.

Game changers don’t just need other people, we need other game changers to help us move forward and be the leaders not the followers that we’re meant to be. And we need to be exactly that for them too. If you’re struggling to find your people right now and if you know a supportive and encouraging creative pack is what you need to help you bridge the gap between where you are now and where you want to be, I have some jumping off points for you today to help you take those first steps towards finding the right game changers for you.

Just Start With One

Sometimes all it takes is one coffee date (or a virtual coffee date via Skype) to build a game changing friendship that leads onto to a bigger network along the way. Instead of worrying about making friends with everyone, invest your energy at first into starting with just one. Set up that Skype call or trip to your local coffee shop and test the waters and see how you fit. If you dream of weekend long retreats with your creative buddies, those kind of game-changing networks all start with just one awkward first hello and seeing where it goes.

Be Human About It

The phrase - make friends not contacts - is so relevant for when it comes to building your creative pack. No-one likes to feel used or like someone is trying to take advantage of them or ‘pick their brain’ - creative friendships are about way more than that. So be human about it. Start with something safe and simple like social media, then take it over to email, and then maybe set up a call or an in-person hang out. Making creative friends is just the same as making any other type of friends - we connect with certain people more than others. We can’t force a friendship or a connection, so we have to let it evolve naturally over time. Lean into the authentic connections that you’re starting to build, and let them grow and evolve along the way.

Collaborate

Collaboration is where the magic happens. Maybe it’s something as a simple as a low-key brainstorming or mastermind session, or maybe you partner up for something bigger like a webinar, joint venture product, or even a client project too. Working together on something that is both mutually beneficial and energising for your creativity too is how great creative friendships are made - and having someone to bounce ideas off, move you forward, and help you push outside of your comfort zone is a serious game changer.

To Finish

I know how hard it can be to find the right people who will push you forward with your business and creativity, and how lonely this journey can feel when it seems like everyone else has a game changing creative pack and you don’t. Creative connections can be built in so many different ways - for me it’s been from coffee shop dates, to Skype calls and collaborations, to coaching clients who have turned into lifelong friends, and if I’ve learned anything so far it’s that they are so worth investing our time and energy into along the way. I hope more than anything that if you haven’t already, you find your creative pack soon. They can move you forward in ways you didn’t know possible, and they can show you what you’re capable of even when you can’t see it yourself.
